A new consumer survey from Brazil has shared a surprising insight about how much Brazilians love Grand Theft Auto 6.

Pesquisa Game Brasil, AKA Game Brazil Survey, held a recent consumer survey in the country about Rockstar Games’ next big upcoming title.

They used a national sample of 1,200 respondents, all of whom were at least aware of the game.

ResetERA user nolifebr translated an article about the survey from Flow Games portal. Flow Games interviewed the men who led the survey; Carlos Silva of Go Gamers and Guilherme Camargo of SX Group.

Brazilians Are Willing To Pay (?)

We’re jumping straight to the big takeaway:

One of the most important data from the research is the public’s perception regarding the price of GTA 6: although it has not been released yet, it is speculated that it will cost between R$500 (~U$92) and R$600 (~U$110), a value considered high by current standards.

However, the responses in the survey were surprising: a third of the public considers this price “fair” (33.2%).

The Unhappy Truth About Gaming In Brazil

One may wonder why Brazilian gamers are willing to pay such steep prices. This has to do with the business and culture of video games in Brazil.

Because video game consoles and PCs were mostly made outside Brazil, the country’s protectionist policies hampered the industry. For a very long time, gaming devices were prohibitively expensive because of these policies. This created an unintended secondary market for clone devices and grey market consoles, also sold at a markup.

Xbox and PlayStation brought some of their console manufacturing to the country so they could get business incentives and lower their prices. However, even then, Brazilian gamers have always paid more to get these devices to play.

This business environment is so unfavorable that Nintendo left Brazil in 2015. They since returned to launch the Switch in the country in 2020, but only through a local business partner. Brazilian regulators couldn’t force Nintendo to go back in the country to discuss their apparent online bans of Switch consoles.

Brazil May Not Represent All Gamers Here

If Take-Two decides to price Grand Theft Auto 6 at $ 100 in the US, Brazilians could pay even more because of the country’s markup. But because of Grand Theft Auto Online, some Brazilians will eat the extra cost. They will buy the game legitimately even if they can get illicit grey market or even black-market versions of the game.

If Brazilians are used to that markup, American and European gamers may not be as willing to pay prices that high. It seems the industry is currently testing the $ 70 price point.

Take-Two will likely price Grand Theft Auto 6 at $ 70. But we would not put it beyond them to see if they can get away with even higher prices.
