Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kits Are Reportedly Very Tough To Come By

August 26, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Developers want to bring games, but they are left waiting.

Nintendo is still riding that wave from the new console launch this past June. However, if you were waiting for some more third-party support games to be unveiled, it’s a bit barren. Or at least it’s more barren than what it could be. A new report has surfaced online suggesting that Nintendo Switch 2 dev kits are not as easily accessible as most studios had hoped.

It’s not surprising that developer kits for this new console had been scarce before the game console was released. Nintendo wants to protect the console as much as possible and ensure that the system not only surprises fans with what it can offer but also with the games that will be released for it. As a result, we only saw a few titles available at launch with native support for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 Developer Kits Are Missing

However, we’re a couple of months past the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Most developers might have hoped that this would mean more dev kits would be released. Unfortunately, that’s reportedly not the case. Thanks to the folks over at Insider Gaming, we’re learning that Digital Foundry’s latest Direct Weekly Show noted what the hosts had heard during Gamescom.

While not listing out any of the studios in particular, it was noted that several developers have stated they would love to bring out Switch 2 games. The problem is that they can’t get their hands on a developer kit. Instead, it looks like Nintendo might be pushing for a game to release on the original Nintendo Switch and rely on backwards compatibility.

This issue also ranges from smaller indie teams to larger AAA projects. We’re not sure just how long this drought will be for some studios. I’m sure it’s beyond frustrating for developers who would like to see some games come out for the Switch 2, but are unable to because they lack the hardware. It’s also equally frustrating for some players who might have hoped for some games to be available now on the system or at least confirmed to be coming for the platform later on.

Again, this is just what is being reported from Digital Foundry. So we can’t verify if there’s a problem right now with getting developer kits out or how many teams might have them available already. Meanwhile, for fans who are just after new content for the system, you might want to get ready for a new Nintendo Direct next month.
