Ubisoft has shown us what they have planned next for Tom Clancy’s The Division franchise.

What Happened To Tom Clancy’s The Division?

Ubisoft released the first Tom Clancy’s The Division in 2016 to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There is some novelty to it being a take on live service before it was defined by Fortnite and Genshin Impact.

The first game sold over 10 million copies. It broke multiple Ubisoft records at launch, including the highest number of first day sales for the company. However, fans were never fully satisfied that it realized its vision.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 was both more critically and commercially successful, releasing in 2019 to the same platforms. It also featured significantly larger post-game content. After two full seasons, Ubisoft found itself continuing support all the way to 2024.

After Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, the franchise entered nebulous territory. Ubisoft developed a battle royale mode for the game. They later spun it off to a standalone title called Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland. Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland in 2021, only to eventually cancel it in 2024.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence is a free-to-play mobile spinoff. It was announced in 2022, and is set to get limited public tests shortly. Ubisoft have still not committed to a release.

And of course, Ubisoft is committed to making a Tom Clancy’s The Division 3. However, they just started development in 2023. This opens up a space for Ubisoft to offer something new, if not as large in scale as the next full sequel.

Announcing Tom Clancy’s The Division Survivors

Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s The Division Survivors in a recent live event. They shared this description on their blog:

The Division 2: Survivors will bring an updated take on the survival extraction experience to The Division 2!

Development of The Division: Survivors is currently in the early stages, under the leadership of Magnus Jansén as Creative Director- a veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said Julian Gerighty, Executive Producer.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Survivors is entering a challenging genre to compete in. Bungie wanted to come in with Marathon before it got embroiled in a plagiarism scandal. While Escape from Tarkov is the clear market leader, it isn’t exactly universally beloved even by its own fans. The most hyped game in the genre recently is the upcoming ARC Raiders, and that could be its biggest competition.

Ubisoft will be happy enough to get a nice slice of the extraction shooter pie, even if they don’t end up being number one on the leaderboard. The developers will also want to pick up things they can bring to Tom Clancy’s The Division 3.

This also represents Ubisoft’s continuing support for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. That’s something we’re sure their players will really appreciate, six years on.
