Epic: Next-Gen Consoles need to be “way out past the bleeding edge”

March 9, 2012 by Mat Growcott

Mark Rein discusses what next-gen consoles need to do if they want to avoid getting beaten by Apple.

There's a change coming on the gaming world: more people are playing video games than ever but the vast majority are taking to their smart phones and internet browsers to top high scores and rescue princesses (and build farms). Because of this shift, people aren't sure what to expect from the next generation of consoles, especially after the Wii U was revealed to have less powerful specs than expected.

Epic Games unveiled the Unreal Engine 4 to industry professionals this week and hopes to make it public later this year. While at GDC, CVG spoke with VP Mark Rein about the prevalence of acronyms in our society, but managed to touch on how Epic is pushing console manufactures to be as good as they can be.

"We really are pushing these guys," he said, "because if they don't [push past the bleeding-edge], Apple will go right past them.

"We really like the big screen, home console experience and we really like iPad gaming. We like all these gaming experiences and we don't think consumers want them to go away.

"The only way they're going to go away is if they don't stay true to what they are. The console gaming experience is about delivering something that's way out past the bleeding edge and subsidising it through the software royalty model – just like Apple does with the phones. It's not that much different."
