Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment Gets New Trailer

July 31, 2025 by Todd Black

There is danger here…enormously so…

While it’s fair that many people were hoping for a proper Nintendo Direct today and not a Partner Showcase, it should be noted that there were some things shown off that were definitely worth your time, such as a new entry in a Nintendo-born spinoff series from Capcom. Another thing that was shown off was Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment. Some of you might have wondered why that game was in the presentation, but the answer is that it’s made by Koei Tecmo, and so it’s technically a collaboration with a 3rd party developer. The more you know, right?

Anyway, at the Nintendo Direct, we got a new trailer for Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, and it showed off more of the Champions of the first kingdom of Hyrule and the challenges they’ll face as Ganondorf fights to overthrow them all.

The new trailer focuses not only on new cutscenes but also shows off some of the new attacks and techniques that can be used by the playable characters, with plenty of time dedicated to King Rauru and Queen Sonia. We also get a tease of the Gerudo champion, one who doesn’t believe in what Ganondorf is doing and feels that his plan is “madness.” There’s even a tease of an all-new mechanical character at the end of the trailer, and it makes you wonder what else this game has in store for us.

However, what is arguably the most important thing that the trailer both says vocally and states in the tweet above is that this game is a “Canonical Tale” that directly ties into Tears of the Kingdom. Why is that important? First, the previous entry in this line was more of a “What If?” tale, as it featured time travel and “interference” that allowed Hyrule to endure the wrath of Ganondorf and one of his followers and then move toward a new future.

This one, however, won’t do that, and that means that the “Imprisoning War” will truly flesh out everything that Zelda went through when she traveled back in time, and the full events that led to Ganondorf’s imprisonment, Rauru’s sacrifice, and what happened to the other Champions. The game has teased that there will be plenty to do outside of battles, including allowing you to roam around this ancient version of Hyrule. Hopefully, we’ll get another trailer for the game soon, so we can learn even more.

The game is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 this winter.
