Grand Theft Auto VI Will Have Been In Development For 8 Years

July 29, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

A former developer reveals when development kicked off.

Very easily, the biggest video game launch of 2026 will go to Grand Theft Auto VI. Fans have been waiting for years to get their hands on this next installment. We know it’s coming, and the official launch date has already been revealed. However, we’re finding out now that this might be Rockstar Games’ longest developed game to date.

That’s coming from a former developer who had worked at Rockstar Games. They even had several years of development for Grand Theft Auto VI. During a recent interview, they might have let it slip that development began in 2018. Of course, we’re left waiting to see just how well that development cycle will have paid off.

Grand Theft Auto VI Development Cycle Revealed

Grand Theft Auto VI’s former developer, David O’Reilly, recently spoke about the game in an interview. Talking with Kiwi Talkz, the developer spoke about how he spent five years working on the game until he left the studio back in 2023. This would put development in 2018, right after Red Dead Redemption 2 was released.

As you know, the game was supposed to release this year. However, the studio needed more time, and as a result, the game was ultimately pushed back to May of 2026. That extra amount of time will hopefully mean we get a far better experience. I know some fans are hopeful that this added time will even address the concerns over its FPS limit.

You can watch the full interview from Kiwi Talkz in the video embedded above. What you might find of interest is that most developers were not aware of the game’s premise. David was an environment artist and noted that outside of environments, he knew the story would feature about two people, but beyond that, there wasn’t much else known. Instead, he was just tasked with making various environments, something that might not even be fully his by the time the game releases. That’s because he’s sure that multiple people have since reviewed and refined the game environments as they prepare for its launch.

Again, we’re all waiting on the game to finally drop. We know that Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on May 26, 2026. When it does release, you’re going to find it available for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
