Microsoft has finally broken up Call of Duty HQ. Or at least, they did it again.
What Microsoft Did Before
In August 2024, Microsoft split Call of Duty Warzone from the other Call of Duty games. Call of Duty Warzone is the free-to-play game playable on PC and consoles. Activision originally bundled it into each new game to encourage their paying players to also play it.

Now, players can choose to not download it in their computer or console if they had a premium game. This suggests that Call of Duty Warzone finally picked up a large number of premium players. So, bundling it in game was no longer necessary.
In the past three years, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III were part of the installation of Call of Duty HQ. That made them an even bigger inconvenience than Call of Duty Warzone. But, there may have been so many active players on both games that it made sense to do this.
The Big Change Today
Today, the official Call of Duty Twitter account announced this:
On July 29 at 9am PT, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will be moved from the main Call of Duty install and become standalone downloads.
Beginning tomorrow, MWII or MWIII owners can access them directly after redownloading each title. Legacy content related to MWII and MWIII modes within the main Call of Duty install will be automatically removed on August 7 to free up storage space.
Call of Duty: Warzone content such as MWII/MWIII operators and weapons will not be impacted by this change.
Does This Mean Call of Duty HQ Is Done?
Some gamers thinkt Microsoft has given up on having a Call of Duty HQ. But then again, Microsoft and Activision have frequently revealed their player data often contradicts the online noise.
Microsoft could be micromanaging Call of Duty HQ year after year. It’s possible that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will also be integrated to Call of Duty HQ for two, even three years. This isn’t based on what Activision or Microsoft wants, but on how long players keep returning.
And if their older games become popular again, Microsoft could also return them to the front of Call of Duty HQ. In general, it makes sense to make dedicated hubs for video game franchises. They’re actually copying games like Genshin Impact, Roblox, and Fortnite. By having a dedicated hub, Activision hopes their players will stay and keep playing their games.
Lest we forget, this is also a sign that Activision is preparing for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. So fans can look forward to the next game coming very soon.
