Build A Rocket Boy has surprised everyone with a huge development update.
The studio shared this official update on Reddit:
It’s been just over a month since MindsEye launched, and we’re grateful for your support and detailed feedback. Your input is shaping our ongoing efforts to enhance the game.
…Moving forward, updates may be less frequent, but with the aim for each to bring more meaningful changes.
The Hitman Crossover Is Delayed
They have delayed the Hitman x MindsEye Mission, which was originally scheduled to release this month. Build A Rocket Boy has not committed to a new release date yet but they will give one ‘when the time is right.’ If IO Interactive intervenes to make this crossover directly, we would not be surprised.
They Commit To Big Changes Next Month
Build A Rocket Boy promises that their 4th big update is coming in August. There will be bug fixes and performance improvements, but they also commit to two big additions.
You will now be able to skip cutscenes. This will come in handy not only if you’ve already finished the story, but so that repeating some levels is less frustrating.
They will also open up Published Player Content in Play.MindsEye on PC. Build A Rocket Boy and its founder Leslie Benzies once promised players would be able to make their own games on MindsEye’s platform, Everywhere. This is a small step closer to that original goal.
There’s Also An Update Planned For September
We’ll let Build A Rocket Boy explain this in their own words:
Planned for September, Update 5 will deliver continued performance and gameplay improvements on all platforms, alongside a number of enhancements to core gameplay mechanics.
Why This Update Is Surprising
This update isn’t really particularly exciting or noteworthy. But it’s genuinely surprising that Build A Rocket Boy was able to make this update at all. The studio confirmed they would be having layoffs at the start of this month. It definitely looked like they would be shutting down after the terrible critical reception and commercial failure that led to said layoffs.

There were also a lot of rumors that Build A Rocket Boy has a bad work environment behind the scenes. This update is clearly intended to disprove those rumors.
Build A Rocket Boy definitely desires that comeback narrative that CD Projekt RED had with Cyberpunk 2077 and Hello Games had with No Man’s Sky. But they will have to try harder to make that happen, because of Leslie Benzies’ sullied reputation. Benzies may not want to talk right now, but he will have to address these rumors in the public eventually.
Otherwise, even if they fix the game, these rumors will always hang over the whole thing.
