New Nintendo Switch 2 Report Highlights Digital Game Sales and Active Users

July 23, 2025 by Todd Black

You won’t guess what’s No.1 in digital sales…

We’ve reported multiple things about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its hardware success in places like Japan and the United States. Both countries saw record sales within their first full month, easily placing it in contention for the biggest console launch in history. However, as we all know, hardware doesn’t mean much if you don’t have games to play on it. Sure, Nintendo had its big racing game as its launch title, and a bunch of ports of other games to supplement it, but how well are they actually doing? Just as important, what are the sales looking like in the digital sense?

Let’s not forget that Nintendo gamers are more than fine with digital sales, especially in places like Japan, so you can’t just look at physical sales and say “it’s done.” That’s where Newzoo comes into play. They looked into the sales numbers for six nations, including the United States and several within Europe, and compiled a list to show what was selling the best in those nations.

That’s where the first big “shock” comes into play, as the No.1 digitally sold game in those six nations…was Deltarune. Yeah, not what you were expecting, right? Oh, but it gets better, as the No.2 title across those six nations was the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which was essentially a “tech demo” for the console. In third was Mario Kart World, which we know has sold well over a million units, and then rounding out the top five were Minecraft and No Man’s Sky.

There are some things that need to be noted here to help “make sense” of what’s going on. First, Japan wasn’t accounted for in this list, so that alone will skew some of the results, especially on the Mario Kart World side. After all, that game has been confirmed to have sold over a million units just in Japan. Furthermore, the bundle with the game and the Nintendo Switch 2 wasn’t counted in this list.

Another thing to point out is that NewZoo also showcased which had the most active monthly users, and in that one, Mario Kart World came out on top, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise given not only its sales, but how much fun most think it is.

There was also a large surge of people who went back to some of the classic Nintendo Switch titles and played them on the Switch 2 because of the upgrades that they got for the new console.
