The Witcher 3 was a phenomenal game. It was a global hit that continues to delight players with its engaging gameplay experience today. CD Projekt Red has since become a massive name in the video game industry, and we’ve seen more than a few developers reflecting on that game. One of the directors at CD Projekt Red is speaking up about how this game was also part of the reason we saw a shift in what to expect from a mature game.
Thanks to GamesRadar, we’re learning that Pawel Sasko discussed the mature game rating. Pawel is currently working as the associate director for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. However, at the time, he was the lead quest designer for The Witcher 3. Pawel noted that developers within the team were getting older when they started working on The Witcher 3, and as a result, they had shifted their views on what they thought a mature game should be.
At the time, most saw mature rating as a game that was just filled with killing and sexual content. However, The Witcher 3 offered a better in-depth storyline, providing players with more than just endless murder. Pawel ensured that it wasn’t just The Witcher 3 that was responsible for shaping our view of mature games today.
Instead, he believes that this was part of a broader cultural shift in the industry, where the medium as a whole was maturing. Of course, now the focus is on the next few games from this studio. With multiple teams working on projects, we know that CD Projekt Red has The Witcher 4 coming out next. However, as mentioned earlier, a sequel installment is coming for Cyberpunk 2077.
We’re certainly interested in seeing how these games handle them and whether they end up surpassing the bar that The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 previously set for players. Both of which still have new content coming. For console players, you’ll soon get mod support on The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 has a surprise update coming out soon.
