The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Sees A Nosedive In Viewers

May 27, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

HBO is not worried.

Oh boy, we knew this was going to be a rough season for viewers who were not attached to the video games. The Last of Us Part II hit us with some big moments early on in the game. So, if you played the games, you knew exactly what some viewers were about to sit in on. That said, we’re learning today that The Last of Us season 2 finale might not have met the strides some initially expected.

Some of you might not have realized that the latest episode of The Last of Us was the finale for season 2. Of course, that means we’re going to be waiting a long time before we can sit in and watch the live-action adaptation progress. However, what might have been alarming for some people is that The Last of Us season 2 finale saw a 55% drop in viewers compared to the finale from The Last of Us season 1. That is a very steep drop-off, and, as mentioned, it could raise some concerns about the future of this series.

However, thanks to The Wrap, we not only learn about the drop in viewers but also HBO’s response to it. According to the publication, it appears that HBO is banking on views increasing over time, as the season 2 finale aired during the holiday weekend. Many viewers would have likely sat in and watched the episode but are instead away. With Memorial Day, it’s a short little vacation for some, which could be the reason we saw this viewer drop.

Of course, the production doesn’t have to worry about getting the green light for season 3. It’s already been confirmed that The Last of Us is getting a third season, so the cast will be gathering again to film the next chapter. Likewise, if you played The Last of Us Part II, you know it’s quite the behemoth of a game.

It has been reported in the past that even with a season 3, we might not wrap up the entirety of this storyline until we get a season 4. Of course, depending on how well the views do with season 3, it might indicate whether we’ll actually get another season. That said, it’s also possible that HBO could bank on some success and green light the following season before season 3 even airs.
