Mortal Kombat 1 Ends Content Support

May 26, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Developers start to focus on the next project.

It’s not too surprising, but NetherRealm Studios is starting to focus fully on its next big game release. That means there won’t be any future content drops for Mortal Kombat 1. For fans who enjoyed this installment, the news might be bitter. However, we can start to speculate about what the next major game release will be from the folks at NetherRealm.

There have been reports and rumors that Mortal Kombat 1 support would end. However, word officially broke out just this past week. Thanks to the folks at Insider Gaming, we’re finding out about a recent X post from the official Mortal Kombat account. The X post noted that the developers are aware of requests to continue game support for this installment, but no future DLC characters or story chapters will be released.

We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.

However, there was confirmation that we should still see balance adjustments and fixes. In a follow-up X post, there was confirmation that this is a shift at the studio to focus on their next project. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any insight into what that next project will be in the post. It could be that we might be getting the next Injustice game, but again, that’s purely speculation right now.

If you haven’t picked up Mortal Kombat 1, the game is readily available on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch platform. This installment stands out compared to previous releases because we’re getting a brand-new timeline. In this game narrative, we see flips between character backgrounds and alliances.

That said, we have a Before You Buy video coverage of the game. You can view that below. However, this video focused on the game when it initially launched in the marketplace. Still, if you’re interested in learning a little more about the new mechanics and gameplay premise, that should help fill you in on our overall impressions.
