A US-China co-production for Tetris The Movie has formed with the project receiving a budget of $80 million, Deadline reports.
The sci-fi movie has been funded following the deal between Mortal Kombat producer Larry Kasanoff’s production company Threshold Entertainment Group and Chinese investment firm Seven Star Works. The companies have formed Threshold Global Studios as a joint venture which aims to finance and develop movies for a global audience.
Tetris will be the company’s first project with the film being shot in China and starring an ensemble cast of Chinese actors. Kasanoff has some experience with bringing video games to the silver screen, he produced the first two Mortal Kombat movies in the ’90s.
“Tetris, one of the most recognized video game franchises of all time, is a perfect first project for this strategy,” Kasanoff commented. “For our debut project, Threshold Global Studios will bring one of the most beloved, cross-generational gaming brands in the world to the big screen as an epic, sci-fi thriller.”
Filming will begin in 2017 and the title is being planned as the first entry in a trilogy. The project was originally announced two years ago.
