One of the biggest questions about the Nintendo Switch 2 right now is its price. At first, that might seem like an odd question, as Nintendo revealed that the new system would launch on June 5th for a price of $449.99. While maybe a little higher than people wanted, it is what many feel is “fair” due to the upgrades over the OG Switch that the upcoming console made. However, with the arrival of tariffs, the system’s US version is now suspected of possibly getting a price hike. It may not happen, but it also could very well happen. It’s a “wait” and see” moment in the worst way.
However, even if the tariffs don’t cause a price hike, which some analysts say is possible, there are going to be those who simply can’t afford the Nintendo Switch 2. After all, the economies of many places aren’t the best, and there’s a struggle going on to be able to afford even the most basic of things, let alone a true luxury like a video game console and its games. To that end, Nintendo of America head Doug Bowser admitted to CBC that he and others at the company understand that not everyone will be able to get the console at first:
“As we look at Nintendo Switch 2 and you think about the feature sets that I talked about … we believe that the pricing is appropriate for the value of the machine and the gameplay experience overall. We recognize there are some people that may not be able to afford [the Switch 2’s] price point. That’s why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available, so [people] still have an opportunity to come into our gaming universe, be a part of these characters in these worlds, and see value, if you will, in whatever rung of the platform they come in.”
Indeed, the Switch 2 will be able to play all past Switch games, and that makes it very valuable to many, especially since some of those Switch games will receive small upgrades to run better on the new platform. Plus, certain upcoming games will be released on both Switch and Switch 2, ensuring that both sides of the “coin” will have an opportunity to play some new games.
Do recall that the OG Switch had an issue with overwhelming demand at first, and many feel its successor will have that, too. So, just save up little by little, and when you’re ready to buy the system? It’ll be there with plenty of games to play.
