One of the biggest reasons why people are excited about the Nintendo Switch 2 system is because of the software lineup that many predict the system will have. Admittedly, one week ago now, we only got a very small picture of what that lineup will look like. We have many 3rd party port titles, but only one exclusive via FromSoftware. Meanwhile, on the 1st party front, while we did get around five titles, they weren’t exactly the ones we were expecting for better and for worse. However, Nintendo is confident that Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza won’t just show off the Switch 2 but will define their own franchises for some time.
This comes from Nintendo exec Bill Trinen, who has been making the rounds to do all sorts of publicity for the Nintendo Switch 2. In a chat with Gamespot, he talked about the two upcoming titles and what they really mean to both Nintendo and the Switch 2:
“Hopefully people are also seeing that with games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza, these are sort of genre-defining or franchise-defining moments for each of these games that really take advantage of the uniqueness of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. And for me, they really feel like, whether you are a Nintendo fan or a video game fan or even a video game developer who makes your own games, each of those games to me feels like something that you really can’t miss. These are must-play games for you to experience what Nintendo is doing next.”
He’s not wrong on that front in many respects. First off, the racing title with Mario and his friends is basically going open world for the first time ever. You’ll be able to not just race the tracks in all-new ways, but every set of tracks is connected, which means that the racing truly never stops, as you’ll get to race from stage to stage to help make the experience even more full.
As for DK’s new title, people are going, um, bananas over the fact that Donkey Kong’s strength is being used to make a fully destructible environment. That feature hasn’t been in any Nintendo game that we can recall, and it makes exploring his new world all the more enjoyable because of what will be hidden within it.
If this is the creativity that The Big N has in store for the Nintendo Switch 2, then there may be other genre-defining titles to discuss soon.
