While there are many reasons to be excited about the Nintendo Switch 2 system, one of the things that many gamers and developers are looking forward to is improvements. After all, while the Switch was an incredible console, it did have its faults. There were graphics issues at times, the online wasn’t as great as many wanted, there were issues with battery life, certain features not being available to gamers, and so on. So, with the Switch 2, that could change, and developers like Hideki Kamiya have offered their own thoughts on what the console could bring to players.
Given that Hideki Kamiya is a bit of a “wild card,” you might not be able to predict what he wanted or what he said. In a chat with IGN, he noted that he wanted one thing “rebooted” for the new system: The Virtual Console.
“As a personal comment, I personally would love to see the Virtual Console rebooted. That’s something that I would really want to ask Nintendo for.”
At first, that might seem like an odd thing to request, but his desire actually ties into another key issue of the Nintendo Switch system: It’s special online program.
Nintendo Switch Online is what gamers must use to play their titles online. It’s functional, and it’s very cheap to use. Yet, one crippling element to it is that while there are certain games offered for free on the service, if you want some of the best ones, you need to pay for the Expansion Pack, which adds to the yearly price.
On the surface, that’s not a bad thing, but when you’re paying for a yearly service, and it adds games you’re never going to play, it’s just a waste, especially when you don’t know when a game YOU want to play will arrive. In contrast, other systems, including Sony’s, offer multiple ways to get older titles.
If the Nintendo Switch 2 were to bring back the Virtual Console, The Big N could still do its “slow rollout” of old-school titles but offer many a chance to get them in a different way. Plus, it should be noted that Nintendo Switch Online doesn’t have as big a user base as one might think with all the Switch units sold.
Whether Nintendo does this is anyone’s guess, as they’ve never “followed trends” when it comes to their online modes and capabilities. However, with the company wanting the Switch to be a huge success, they could consider this.
