Phil Spencer Comments On Xbox Series S Parity Concerns

January 28, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Xbox head makes a strong point.

Xbox fans might be wondering if there’s any consideration going on right now about dropping the Xbox Series S. There have been a few developers that have commented on the frustration over dealing with the Series S. Microsoft has it to where games on the Xbox must support the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X. Overall when the Series S was introduced, it was a means to enjoy the latest generation of video games but without the 4K powerhouse that Series X offered. Phil Spencer recently commented on whether we might see an end to this parity deal.

During a conversation on the Destin podcast, Phil Spencer was asked directly about the potential of allowing developers to release games that are not supported on the Series S. That might speed some developers up from having to go through some optimization hurdles to deliver these games on the lower-powered console. However, Phil doesn’t seem to think Microsoft intends to drop the parity requirements.

Instead, Phil noted that this Series S requirement is more beneficial for developers. Looking at the industry now, the head of Xbox notes that more handheld devices are being released. Then you even have the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console. So, having a platform where developers are already optimizing a game for a lower-powered console might help them bring the games to some of these other platforms.

That, I’m sure, is a relief for players who might exclusively enjoy the latest generation of video games on the Xbox Series S. Meanwhile, this wasn’t the only news to have come out from this interview. We also reported on Phil Spencer’s comments, reiterating that no game or franchise is being held back exclusively for the Xbox platform. So, we might soon see some other titles find their way to competitor platforms, including Starfield.
