There’s no shortage of rumors and speculation in the video game industry. One topic that continues to see plenty of rumors online is Xbox. We’ve seen Microsoft make some adjustments lately with Xbox. While initially, it favored acquisitions, the latest move seems to bring the once-believed exclusives from Microsoft’s Xbox library to other platforms. The next major title release to potentially see an exodus of only being available for Xbox in terms of consoles might be Bethesda’s Starfield.
Recently, Destin Legarie posted a new interview with Phil Spencer, during which a question was asked about whether Phil Spencer could solidify that Starfield will be staying put for the time being. According to Phil, that’s not something he can say yes to. Instead, he goes back to mentioning previous comments about no one game or franchise that Microsoft would see as not a contender for a multiplatform release.
So, we might see Starfield come to the PlayStation 5 sooner rather than later. Of course, that again might raise some red flags for the Xbox fan community. Destin followed up the question by asking what Phil might say to those who feel Xbox is losing its identity.
Phil Spencer noted that he hears fans and views the community’s comments. In his eyes, Phil views Xbox as having evolved in the past and will continue to evolve. The important aspect that Microsoft wants to ensure players is that their library of games is safe. Again, the focus is to allow players more ability to play games no matter what they are on.
This differs from what Microsoft has been pushing with the latest Xbox campaign. Rather than focusing on Xbox as a console platform, Xbox is being pushed as a service accessible to multiple devices. We’ve seen apps released to give Smart TVs and FireSticks the ability to stream Xbox Game Pass. That doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. However, it might leave some fans wondering what might make the next console entice them to purchase from Xbox if the games eventually land on competitor platforms.
