Game of Thrones Kingsroad Announed At The Game Awards

December 13, 2024 by Todd Black

Your story, your name, your destiny.

There was a lot going on at The Game Awards last night, and there were even some legit surprises that fans have enjoyed. One that no one saw coming was the announcement of the WB Games and Netmarble title Game of Thrones Kingsroad. The title will take place within the timeline of the HBO series, including bringing back certain actors to be the characters in animated form. That includes Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, alongside the actors for Vaerys, Jamie Lannister, and presumably even more. But the question many of you may have is, what is the game about? That’s a little more complicated than you may think.

While the title does take place within the show’s lore, it features an all-new character, an illegitimate son, whom Jon Snow asks for help on to stop the White Walkers. He tasks this warrior with going around and uniting the great houses, all the while making his own name within the realm. The RPG will feature plenty of combat, including dealing with White Walkers, dragons, and more. The real question is how will it play within the show’s story, and how much of an impact the character you play will have.

Another thing to note here is that the game is being headed up by WB Games, which is problematic, as it’s not had the best run of titles recently, especially with games set within certain universes. Not to mention, while Game of Thrones Kingsroad may “salvage” some of what the series has lost over the last several years, it’s not going to fix that last TV season that many still despise. Just saying!

One of the more ironic things about this game reveal to note is that WB Games did tease it in a small way last month. You might recall that its fighting game, Multiversus, heavily bombed after finally being fully released into the wild, and between that and its game about The Suicide Squad, the company had lost about $300 million, and needed to seriously rework what it was going to do with it titles. When it listed the games that it would be focusing on, this franchise was one of them. Obviously, the company didn’t say to “wait until The Game Awards for more information,” but we can see now why that game was mentioned.

The series by George R.R. Martin has had games made about it in the past, but if this one is quality, that would be a true first.
