It’s always a good thing to know that gamers truly resonate with a video game product, no matter what that product is, who made it, or even what platform it’s on. Sony does an interesting activity every month on its PlayStation Blog. The blog notes the big games that come out each month for the PS4/PS5 and then lets gamers pick which was the best game of the month. That way, it’s known what players liked the most, got the most, or felt stood out above the rest. For November, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake took the top spot in the poll.
While it’s true that the competition may not have been the biggest in November, as there were a lot of “minor titles” to challenge the Square Enix remake, including a LEGO version of Aloy’s adventures, it’s still impressive that the RPG remake was the one to get the top spot. In truth, it speaks to the wider wonder and joy that has come with the game since its launch. After all, at first, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was “just a simple remake with better graphics.” Instead, the team went deep to expand the story further and make the world look better than ever before.
It’s important to note that the game never had a “remaster” or anything like that. Thus, you either played the original version or you never played it at all. So, for many, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was their chance to enjoy a classic RPG experience and see what all the hype was about. Sure enough, the hype was worth it, and many praised Square Enix for how this was developed. Just in Japan, the game has basically sold over a million physical copies on its own, and the digital sales definitely put it well over a million. That highlights how much Japan loves this particular RPG series and wants to see more like it.
The good news for them is that this is already confirmed to happen, as the Erdrich trilogy will have its other two main games released in HD-2D forms. If the team can match the quality of this first part, those will likely match in sales numbers, if not potentially surpass them. Then, once the entire trilogy is out, gamers might get the itch to buy all three to play the entire trilogy in order without having to wait too long between entries.
Either way, no matter what platform you play the game on, this RPG is not to be missed.
