Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Drops “The Heist” Cinematic

December 9, 2024 by Todd Black

One does not simply hypnotize Donkey Kong!

While we still don’t have any real information about the Switch 2, the OG Switch will have plenty of things for gamers to enjoy as they prepare for its arrival in 2025. That’s because Nintendo is doing a lot to ensure that there are new titles and key ported titles coming to the Switch in the new year’s early months, and one of those titles is Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Admittedly, this is one of the more controversial parts of recent years, but it will be the first one to hit the Switch, as it’s coming out next month.

To help celebrate that, The Big N dropped the HD-improved opening cinematic for players to check out. Called “The Heist,” it sets the tone for the game, as we see the Tikis arrive and then use their special musical hypnosis to get Donkey Kong’s animal friends to steal all of his bananas. As anyone who has played a DK game knows, you do NOT mess with the Kong family’s banana horde! You just don’t. Bad things happen to those that do. It’s canon.

Anyway, after DK stymies a hypnosis attempt on himself, which says a lot about the character, he puts the beatdown on the Tiki in question and then races to go get his bananas back.

That is indeed the plot of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. You’ll go through Donkey Kong Island and work with Diddy Kong to try to get your banana horde back from the Tikis. Retro Studios was the team behind the game, and they imbued the title with everything that was popular from the SNES era of DK games while adding some unique visual and gameplay quality-of-life improvements and ideas to help it stand out more. The “sunset levels” where we would only see certain colors of DK and Diddy come to mind when we say that.

While certain details remain unknown, the common belief is that this HD version of the game will feature the additional levels that the 3DS port had a long while back, so that means there will be plenty of things to do in the game once it arrives on Switch.

That being said, this doesn’t stop fans from wanting a NEW title featuring Donkey Kong and his family. The games have sold well on both Wii, Wii U, and Switch, and there isn’t really a reason for Nintendo not to bring him back. So, hopefully, we’ll see something fresh with him on Switch 2.
