There’s some interesting rumors going around about the Switch 2, which are unusually specific. But there’s definitely a flip side to that.
We’ll start off with Samus Hunter, who shared this statement on Twitter:
“This lines up with what I heard. For the price I heard it would have been on the lower side of this range, not 500 but most likely 399-449$ depending on region or tax included and a late spring release like June.
- Late Spring release: May/June release depending on production number for launch
- Aiming for 399/449$: Depending on taxes
- Presentation already confirmed for this FY, speculation between late January/February, no info on that now.
- They still have to announce some Switch 1 games”
Samus Hunter was responding to a GameReactor article that cited one of the site’s former editors, Juan A. Fonseca. Fonseca heard from developers that Nintendo isn’t ready to make enough Switch 2 stock to launch the console in March. Therefore, the Switch 2 will be launching between June or July of 2025. Fonseca also claims that the Switch 2 will be priced at € 400. And Fonseca referred to the price in euros, because that happens to be the currency in his native Spain.
So Samus Hunter built on that rumor with details of their own. Samus Hunter’s and Fonseca’s information doesn’t line up 100 %, but they are closer to each other than other claims. And both clearly deviate from the rumor last month that the console would be revealed this January 2025 and launched in March of that year as well.
We cannot honestly tell you if this or other rumors are more credible or not. Even with the shipping data that some other fans have been tracking and disclosing, we don’t have enough context if that could possibly indicate if Nintendo is preparing enough stock for a March launch. How many factories around the world has Nintendo requisitioned to make their consoles? We aren’t likely to ever find that out.
And of course, there is the possibility, that this rumor might be 100 % true, but everything could still change. For example, Nintendo has the momentum to force potential rivals like Steam, Sony, and Microsoft into a price war.
Imagine, for example, in the face of the Steam Deck’s base $ 399 price, if Nintendo priced a base Switch 2 at $ 350. They could drag everyone down to lower their prices, or successfully eat up most of the consumer share. Nintendo has never sold a console at a loss, but if they cut down on features like storage and battery size, they might find ways to actually do this.
Subsequently, since we don’t know how many factories Nintendo has making consoles, we can’t account for variables like factories suddenly making more units more quickly than they had planned. If a March launch doesn’t look feasible now, that could change come January.
So as exciting as it is to ponder what looks like solid details, we don’t put that much weight on this rumor at all. Being right or wrong on this rumor is not going to affect any of our credit scores, anyway, so there’s no need to take any of this seriously.
But it will certainly be interesting if there’s a rumor out there that could prompt Nintendo to actually react, to debunk or confirm, before they make that official announcement.
