Red Barrels Reportedly Hit With Cyber Attack With Over 1TB of Data Compromised

October 3, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Outlast developers might find their source codes leaked online.

It’s unfortunate but not rare to see various cyber and ransomware attacks. Different companies, not just the gaming industry, face these attacks. Hacker groups will invade a company, steal data, and then demand a certain amount of funds to have the data deleted. This vicious game is not something a company wants to play, and it seems like Red Barrels is now an unwilling participant.

Thanks to a report from MP1st, we’re learning that Red Barrels was recently compromised. The development studio reportedly took to X and revealed that they discovered their internal IT systems were hit. They have since taken the steps to investigate and notify employees and stakeholders. Fortunately, support is being provided for their employees as a precautionary measure.

According to the publication report, Red Barrels didn’t offer any insight into what was specifically taken. However, this has resulted in some of their roadmap plans being delayed. The length of delay the teams might be facing is unknown, but the notice from Red Barrels on X has since been removed online.

MP1st also noted that they have a source familiar with the situation and they were able to clairfy what content was taken. The attack apparently had taken credit card information, HR content, game builds, and full source codes for the first two Outlast games. This data totals 1.8TB and currently there is an undisclosed amount of money being demanded from Red Barrels. There is a chance we might see this content leak online, much like the Insomniac Games attack that happened at the end of last year. But we’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
