Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have continued to pop up since 2021 following the infamous Nvidia GeForce Now database leak. In June, a reference to the game was found in the Epic Game Store, and each time representatives from Square Enix appear at events, fans are quick to ask about the classic game’s future. Now, Naoki Yoshida is providing some insight.
In a new interview with the Video Games side of Sports Illustrated, Yoshida, lovingly known as Yoshi-P by the community, was asked which game in the franchise he’d like to remake.
“Oh man, that’s a super tough question,” Yoshida said. “The one that I would like to make myself would be Final Fantasy 3, I think. Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy 9 to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy 9, it’s a game with huge volume.
When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question.”
Final Fantasy 9 was released for the PlayStation in July 2000. It was re-released in 2010 as a PS1 classic on the PlayStation Store and was compatible with the PSP and PlayStation 3, with PlayStation Vita support added in 2012. An enhanced port was released in 2016.
Earlier this year, the infamous leaker Midori claimed that the 9 remake was still in production, with Square Enix possibly setting up to announce the game before April 2025. Since this time, Midori has lost a great deal of credibility, though some of their previous leaks did prove to be true.
