PlayStation 5 Pro Will Still Have 30 FPS Games

September 11, 2024 by Carley Garcia

‘Enhanced’ titles won’t necessarily run at 60 FPS.

Yesterday, the PlayStation 5 Pro was finally announced, promising players willing to fork over $700 for a more immersive and graphically impressive experience. Although Sony’s presentation revealed that PS5 Pro Enhanced titles would run at 60 FPS on the new system, Tom Warren has clarified that this is not guaranteed and that some games will still run at 30 FPS.

“I reported earlier this year that PS5 Pro Enhanced games doesn’t guarantee 60fps. Sony wasn’t super clear on this yesterday, but there will still be 30fps PS5 Pro Enhanced games,” Warren said on X.

According to reports, developers have the option of targeting 60 FPS over 30 FPS, though these titles may still technically quality as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Sony is aiming to have up to 50 PS5 Pro Enhanced games ready at launch, with another 8,500 PS4 backward compatible titles promising improved performance through the Pro’s Boost Mode.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, CEO Hideaki Nishino promised the following features:

  • Upgraded GPU: “With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.”
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: “We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.”
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: “We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.”

Announced to some fan frustration over the console’s price, the Pro will feature support for 60Hz and 120Hz displays, advanced ray tracing, and 4K output. Compatible games can be played at up to 120 FPS via AI upscaling.

The PlayStation 5 Pro will be released on November 7 and will cost a staggering $699.99. Similar in style to the ‘slim’ PlayStation 5, the console will not include a disc drive, though one can be purchased separately.
