Mortal Kombat 1 Team Highlights Sektors Devastating Brutality and Design

September 10, 2024 by Todd Black

Seriously, Don’t Mess With Her

As you’ve seen in recent weeks, NetherRealm Studios has been dropping all sorts of information and videos about Mortal Kombat 1 in preparation for the “Khaos Reigns” expansion that is imminent. In fact, just today, they dropped the official gameplay trailer for Noob Saibot, showcasing both his in-game moves, while also detailing parts of his story within the expansion. However, he’s not the only one arriving via the multiversal story. Cyrax and Sektor will also join the fray but in new forms beyond just upgraded looks. Both are female fighters, and both of them wear exosuits versus being cyborgs. It’s an important twist that NetherRealm was proud of.

On the PlayStation Blog, Design Manager Nick Nicastro showed off some new images and gifs of Sektor, including her Brutality that’s so, uh, brutal, that you need to type in your age just to see it! However, he also detailed the methodology behind the changes to the character:

“Design-wise, we wanted to explore the idea that in this new timeline Sektor fights in a cyber suit as opposed to being completely robotic, a precursor to the origins of the Lin Kuei’s cybernetic initiative before they reached the level of fully converting humans into cyborgs. For Mortal Kombat 1, the goal was to convey strength and overwhelming firepower through her use of heavy weapons. Sektor’s power comes primarily through an exosuit that deploys her assortment of weapons but also enhances her hand-to-hand fighting ability using thrusters on her palms and feet. Despite Sektor’s new appearance, it remained imperative to design abilities that retain the DNA from the klassic version of the character, while simultaneously complementing her toolkit with new powers that highlight the technology of her new exosuit.”

As for the style she employs, Sektor is a “space control” character who also has impressive air strikes and mobility. So, if that suits your needs, you’ll want to play as her in the game. She also has multiple good guards, including locking herself to the ground so that no projectiles can push her backward.

While her moves make her powerful, her personality can be a bit…aggressive. Sektor still maintains an unhealthy relationship with Cyrax, mainly due to the former bullying the latter. Plus, she has an undying loyalty to her master, Bi-Han, which will lead to multiple controversial elements in the upcoming expansion. It’ll be curious to see what kind of evolution, if any, she’ll go through by the story’s end.

Oh, and about that Brutality we mentioned…
