It’s been over ten days since Star Wars Outlaws arrived, and the talk about it has been surprisingly minimal. The game had buzz going into its launch, but since it came out, it went away quickly. It’s true that the game had rather “middling” review scores, which even the dev team was sad about, but games have overcome that many times over to have good hype and sales post-launch. Yet, here, gamers are divided about whether it’s a good title or “yet another Ubisoft game, just with a different skin.” There have been multiple complaints about the title, and one of them is, thankfully, getting fixed soon.
In a chat with Games Radar, creative director Julian Gerighty noted that the dev has heard fan complaints about how the difficulty spikes due to the “instant fail” missions that require players to use stealth to get around. If you get caught, you’re done. The problem is that these are apparently really hard to do, and with in-game bugs/glitches, being stealthy is nearly impossible at times. So, the team will adjust it to be more “fair” in their minds:
“I mean, you’re probably thinking of one of the early missions in Mirogana, which is incredibly punishing. And for me, that is a mistake, and this is something that we’re going to work on improving. I don’t think it means removing the fail state completely, but I do think there are millions of low hanging fruits where we can make it so much more enjoyable and understandable. We just don’t want it to feel unfair. And today, I think it feels unfair. And believe it or not, this wasn’t our intention. This is more of something that crept in in the last week or so, and that we’re correcting already for a patch that’s coming out maybe in ten days.”
So, on the one hand, the game will get a patch soon, and that might make Star Wars Outlaws more enjoyable to start. However, on the other hand, you have to wonder if this is a case of “too little, too late,” even though the game hasn’t been out for two weeks. Based on early estimates, the game isn’t selling that well. It’s not doing well compared to other recent titles in the franchise, and with the hype around it pretty much gone, it’s hard to see a simple patch fixing all the problems that players have with it.
