Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Dino Crisis series, is surprised to hear that so many fans want a new entry to the franchise.
Although the last game in the Dino Crisis series came out over two decades ago, fans are desperate to bring it back to life. In an April survey from Capcom, the series sat at the top of the list of requested revivals, followed closely by Mega Man. However, Mikami remains stunned at this massive amount of feedback. He also points out that Monster Hunter is the current focus at the company.
“The awesomeness of dinosaurs and the stuff you can do with dinosaurs, that’s been kind of really nailed down by Monster Hunter in recent years,” Mikami said to Eurogamer. “So even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version of Dino Crisis, I don’t really feel like there’s a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just since Monster Hunter has become such a big game. But yeah, it is surprising.”
The first Dino Crisis game was released in 1999 to huge fanfare. It was followed by two sequels, with the last game, Dino Crisis 3, released in 2003.
While the first game saw massive acclaim, Dino Stalker and Dino Crisis 3 weren’t recieved as well. 2024 marks the series’ 25th anniversary, and many hoped that this would mean an announcement was incoming. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
As of 2019, the dinosaur-centric series has sold over 4.4 million copies worldwide. The first game was ported to the PC and Dreamcast in 2000 and also re-released on the PlayStation Network in 2006.
