Microsoft is rumored to be bringing even more games to PlayStation 5.
Speculation around a new Microsoft game coming to PlayStation 5 began last week, thanks to NateDrake and Shinobi602. As reported by XboxEra, they dropped hints that more Xbox games would be announced to come to new platforms, and it’s clear that they are alluding here to PlayStation 5.
For their part, extas1s shared more details on what they knew. As shared and translated on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit by user MXHombre123, they said this:
“On the one hand, calm down for Starfield, there are still no active plans for it.
On the other hand, for Forza Horizon 5 there are, and it will be released in not too long.
The announcement? It doesn’t matter if it happens this week, next week or the other, but it is coming to PS5 in the next few months as confirmed in my GIF and as many colleagues have already corroborated.
Some colleagues believe that the announcement will be imminent, others not so much, but it is coming.”
Those were all rumors that spread around about five days ago. Now, as reported by PSU, extas1s claims that Microsoft is preparing to release four games on the PlayStation 5.
extas1s already said that Forza Horizon 5 is one of those four games. They also made it clear that Starfield is not one of the four games. That is to say, they think Starfield is coming to PlayStation 5 eventually, but there are four other games that we should expect to come sooner.
This comes up just as another rumor has appeared that MachineGames’ Indiana Jones And The Great Circle is only a timed exclusive to Xbox, and will also be coming to PlayStation 5 in the first half of 2025.
Assuming all of these rumors so far are correct, than there may be two more games that have not been announced yet but are coming to Microsoft’s rival console. And we assume that these are not the multiplatform games that Microsoft already publishes to PlayStation, as the owner of Zenimax and Activision.
Now, consider that Microsoft is already slated to make a lot of money off of PlayStation 5 this holiday season. Between the release of Call of Duty Black Ops 6, new content coming to Overwatch 2, Diablo IV, and Minecraft, and others, they are already catering to their rival’s core audience very well. They seem to have also learned from the initial tranche of Microsoft exclusives.
All of this seems set to position Microsoft as Sony’s biggest and most successful third party publisher. We imagine Microsoft would at least consider other titles before throwing in their franchise lynchpins like Halo to their rivals. But if this is where we are eventually going, this initial batch of releases is clearly market research. Microsoft wants to find out what kinds of games PlayStation 5 users will buy from them, and both PlayStation and Xbox users will direct how they make their games moving forward.
It’s certainly an unusual choice. Maybe there’s a bigger picture to this the company sees that we don’t. But if they see this as their path to success, and that means their devs get to keep making games, maybe it is what’s best for Xbox after all.
