Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, bringing years of waiting and speculation to a climactic close. While launching the third game in the original Erdrick Trilogy first may sound strange, the 1988 prequel was technically the first chronologically.
Square Enix also teased that the Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remakes are coming sometime in 2025. The games were first released in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
“Years ago, the great hero Ortega bid farewell to his wife and child as he set off on a quest to defeat the villainous Archfiend, Baramos,” the game’s description reads. “Ortega failed his quest, and Baramos still threatens the world. Now, on their sixteenth birthday, Ortega’s only child is summoned by the king of Aliahan and entrusted with a mission of the highest import: to take on Ortega’s quest, vanquish Baramos, and save the world.”
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will feature pixel art combined with 3D graphics, along with improved UI and other quality-of-life improvements. Players will enjoy new battle animations, an auto-battle setting, and adjustable battle speed for those who want to go fast.
Preordering either the standard physical or digital edition of the game will net players a free Trouble-Free Travel Kit in the game, which includes:
- Elevating Shoes x1
- Seed of Strength x3
- Seed of Defence x3
- Seed of Agility x3
- Seed of Life x3
- Seed of Magic x3
Additionally, the Collector’s Edition will come with a special storage box, acrylic blocks, two exclusive digital wallpapers, and the above Trouble-Free Travel Kit, as well as the following in-game items:
- Ring of Strength x1
