According to leaker Midori, the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake is still in production, with Square Enix possibly setting up to announce the game before April 2025.
“The Final Fantasy 9 remake is still in development,” Midori wrote on X today. “It is a title that was not canceled in the restructure of SQEX during this fiscal year. According to conversations, the title was originally outsourced to another developer. But SQEX was not satisfied and development shifted.”
The remake was first rumored to be in the works in 2021 following the Nvidia GeForce Now database leak. Square Enix has never confirmed or denied the news.
“Development of this title is now very far along,” Midori continued. “But I do not have any firm information on the scope of this title or a firm release period right now. This title could release before the end of this fiscal year, but I am not certain right now.”
Although some Square Enix titles are scheduled to appear during the upcoming Xbox Showcase, Midori stresses that fans should “Keep expectations low right now.” They also confirm that the Final Fantasy 9 remake is being planned for release on multiple platforms
An animated series adaptation by Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios was announced in 2021, though little is known about when this will be released.
Final Fantasy 9 was released for the PlayStation in July 2000. It was re-released in 2010 as a PS1 classic on the PlayStation Store and was compatible with the PSP and PlayStation 3, with PlayStation Vita support added in 2012. An enhanced port was released in 2016.
