Sony has confirmed that Concord is still releasing this year.
As reported by PlayStation Universe, Sony reiterated that the game is still scheduled for 2024 in their latest financial meeting.
Concord is one of the few live service titles Sony planned from a few years ago that didn’t get cancelled, and has moved forward to apparent release. Sony made this choice under former head Jim Ryan, as a necessary shift from their single player games.
While games like The Last of Us and God of War are popular games on awards shows and fan lists, Sony has found it increasingly challenging to justify making more, when they put too much money into making the games, in comparison to the actual return they get from sales.
It certainly seems it needs to be clarified for fans, that the millions of units that these games are making don’t match up with the budgets that were set aside for them. The push for live service games makes sense, insofar as Sony sees more PlayStation 5 owners spending time playing Fortnite, and wanting to get some of that playtime and revenue for themselves.
But Sony has been reticent in sharing details about Concord, to the point that we still aren’t really entirely sure what to expect with this game. We do know that Sony went out of their way to acquire Firewalk Studios all the way back in 2021 to make this game.
And, of course, we got the very generic description of PVP multiplayer first-person shooter, when Sony shared a trailer last year. But it’s possible Sony was waiting a year later to share even more about this game.
If the rumor that Sony will reveal God of War Ragnarok for PC is true, then the other rumor attached to it may also be true. That rumor is that Sony will have their PlayStation Showcase this May again, ahead of June.
If we do make an assessment of the competition, Firewalk is likely bracing for competition coming for them to the PlayStation 5. The leaks of Marvel Rivals just punctuates how much interest there is for that multiplayer game, and Ubisoft’s XDefiant is also slated to launch soon.
While Sony and Firewalk continues to keep Concord under a spectre of secrecy, we do know that it won’t be substantially that much different from the abovementioned titles, or games like Call of Duty, Overwatch, etc. For Sony’s investment to have paid off, they need to make sure that Firewalk’s project meets Sony gamers’ expectations.
