Dealabs editor billbil-kun has shared an interesting new rumor about God of War: Ragnarok.
As reported on Dealabs, billbil-kun claims that God of War: Ragnarok is the next game PlayStation Studios will bring to PC. The announcement will be made in May 2024, and they added another bombshell on top of that.
billbil-kun says that Sony will bring back the PlayStation Showcase this May, and not next month, to make this announcement. That would put them ahead of the big video game promotional period in June, which was all timed around the now defunct E3 event. But, Sony did do the same thing last year, so this isn’t without precedent.
Now, remember that the PlayStation State of Play events are smaller events, where they share information about games that have already been announced, and where they will also feature smaller games and VR games. PlayStation Showcase is where Sony announces their major AAA blockbusters, and also where they have the more grandiose trailers and presentations.
If true, that puts the 2024 PlayStation Showcase in a weird position. As we already know from the acting head of PlayStation, Hiroki Totoki, Sony has no AAA level games ready for this financial year. That doesn’t mean there are no games on the way, but they aren’t going to be able to bring anything as big as The Last of Us 2 or Uncharted 4 to this year’s Showcase.
Sony will definitely still have games to reveal, such as big AAAs from third parties, and smaller games. Those smaller games could include indies, and it could also include their live service games, if those games are at AA scale instead of AAA. And then, of course, there are the potential ports of their AAA games to PC.
God of War: Ragnarok was released on November 2022 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and has a lot of potential on PC. We had previously reported on the wealth of display and performance options the game had on PlayStation 5, which seemed to be a strong hint that the game was already made to bring to PC even during development.
But this port also raises the spectre of the now ugly question on where God of War: Ragnarok will go to PC. Until very recently, PlayStation Studios had been porting their games to PC, to play on all regions.
However, second party title, Helldivers 2, and now first party title, Ghost of Tsushima, have all been delisted in regions where Sony did not bring their PSN service. That means those regions don’t get access to these games.
Unlike those games, God of War: Ragnarok is only a single player title. But the speculation is Sony wants to add PSN log-in to all their PC titles, so they may choose to not bring this and future games to those regions. So this announcement will be a huge signal if PlayStation Studios PC games is region locked moving forward.
