Activision has said that this year’s Call of Duty will be “innovative” but if an apparent listing on the PlayStation Store is to be believed, its title, at least, will be anything but. According to Redditor Goontmyfries, this year’s instalment of the shooter franchise will be titled “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare“.
The supposed listing comes before the game’s official reveal by Infinity Ward and Activision, which have not yet publicly announced the game’s title. An alleged retailer listing leaked earlier this month suggests the game could be announced by Tuesday, May 3rd.
Rumours have suggested that the game is set in a far future sci-fi setting, an idea which the Infinite Warfare title would seem to reinforce.
As ever with such listings, it’s entirely possible that this is a fake. Short of confirmation from Activision itself, it’s best not to take anything as official. Something else to consider is that Activision also publishes Bungie’s Destiny, another far future sci-fi shooter and the company may not want to split its base in such a way.
We do know the title is currently in development at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Ghosts studio Infinity Ward. While Ghosts, Black Ops 2 and 3, and Advanced Warfare have all been set in the future, fans generally seem opposed to the idea of a full-on sci-fi Call of Duty. If Infinite Warfare does indeed fit into that genre, Activision may have a hard time convincing its community to follow.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was 2015’s best selling game.
