We have a bombastic rumor on the future of the Persona series, as two very trusted sources have incredible things to say about Persona 6.
As reported by The Game Crater, it all started on an episode of Spawn Wave’s Direct Xbox podcast. Nate The Hate randomly dropped the rumor that Persona 6 would be coming to Xbox. Nate clarified that he didn’t know if it would be launching on Xbox and PlayStation on the same day, but he was certain about it coming to Sony’s rival platform.
Midori then chimed in on Spawn Wave’s tweet about it. She claimed that it would definitely be a multiplatform release. And when asked follow up questions, she confirms that Persona 6 is also planned to release on Nintendo’s next platform, the platform the community has dubbed the Switch 2.
We already knew that Atlus was planning to make Persona a multiplatform franchise after they saw how successful they were bringing the Persona games to both Xbox and Nintendo platforms, as well as on PC. The audience that Atlus had cultivated on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 now has a bigger potential for expansion, on Sony’s rival platforms.
One could argue that the Persona franchise could not have gotten as big as it did if Atlus did not dedicate themselves to bringing the games to PlayStation for these console generations. Of course, this is not because Japanese games can’t be successful on non-PlayStation platforms.
Rather, the circumstances in those generations were such that Sony were particularly successful in the market. To add to that, they had cultivated an audience that was learning to embrace video games made in Japan, that were in turn, starting to adapt to their new global, primarily Western, audience.
But the circumstances have changed today, as the fandom around the PlayStation is now really a fraction of the total gaming market today. So, it’s not like Atlus decided to go to Xbox and PlayStation. Their choice was to go to all platforms, and try to make Persona fans in every platform and their fandom.
With all this considered, it’s also highly likely that a PC release is also planned for this title. Neither Nate the Hate nor Midori confirmed it, but it’s more likely that a previous PlayStation exclusive would come to PC before either of the other consoles.
And it could certainly make one wonder if this will be a simultaneous release across all platforms. It would be a first for Atlus to try, but given their pedigree, and their presumed familiarity with the different platform holders, they could pull it off.
