We have a new rumor about Ghost of Tsushima. You know it’s the one you wanted to hear.
As shared by Shpeshal Nick Baker on Twitter, he claims a PC port of the game is about to be announced soon. Nick said:
“I’m hearing that we might be getting something about the Ghost of Tsushima PC port pretty soon. Maybe around the 5th?”
Released in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima is one of Sony’s most beloved modern franchises. In fact, this title also stands as one of the most requested to come to PC, since Sony started bringing their games to PC under the PlayStation Studios banner.
After the release of Infamous First Light, studio Sucker Punch unfortunately had some layoffs, as they had to regroup and come up with a new project to push themselves forward. The studio based in Bellevue Washington made the surprising decision to make a game set in feudal Japan, the same Japan their now owner, Sony, was based.
Surprisingly enough, Sony greenlit the project, and had people from the then-still-existing Japan Studio come over to help Sucker Punch make the title. And just to make sure that Sucker Punch would get the setting right, they visited Tsushima Island twice, collecting as much information about the island’s culture as possible.
A lot of the hype speculated on the game being a Soulslike, but it really is another open world action adventure title with a strong narrative. This one distinguishes itself from the pack with the unfair combat, that will raise the temptation to use the dishonorable ghost mode, and the feudal Japan setting, for which Sucker Punch took copious inspiration from samurai movies like The Seven Samurai.
At the start of this year, we reported on a rumor that Sony has prepared a long stream of PC ports of their first party games, to release throughout 2024. This is part of a strategy to compensate for the lack of new AAA titles for the PlayStation 5 to release this year. While new games takes years to make from scratch nowadays, it’s comparatively easier to part those games to PC.
This strategy may also be something of a rebuke against PlayStation 5 owners themselves. As successful as Sony has been in selling their PlayStation 5 consoles and first party games, they aren’t selling enough to match expectations. In other words, Sony paid for development, expecting to get a certain return, and they just aren’t making that money back from their own fans.
If Sony is looking for new buyers outside of their own fanbase, PC is certainly the way to go. While most gamers will likely pick up Ghost of Tsushima on Steam at launch, there will definitely be gamers who will want to get the game on Epic Games Store, and most importantly, DRM-free on GOG.
