No Elden Ring DLC Is Planned After Shadow of the Erdtree

February 22, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say.

Hidetaka Miyazaki definitively ended any questions about new Elden Ring DLC.

As reported by Tech4Gamers, Miyazaki said this in an interview with IGN Japan:

“There are no plans for additional DLC or Elden Ring 2. Even if it’s not the complete end to the story.”

Some fans may want to make a big deal about Miyazaki saying that Elden Ring does not have a ‘complete end,’ but we need to put this in context of how Elden Ring was made. And what we need to remember in particular is that this was a collaboration with famed author and TV writer George RR Martin.

While the meme about Martin being unable to finish his Game of Thrones story is still valid, it would also be true that making more Elden Ring content would need to have him in consideration. If Martin is available and willing to write more Elden Ring, than maybe we could see future DLC, or maybe better, an Elden Ring 2.

Fans should also be mindful that even with his name not appearing prominently in the marketing, it’s more than likely that Martin was involved to some degree with upcoming DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. He may have written all or most of that expansion for FromSoftware. Even the scenario where FromSoftware worked off of some ideas that Martin had not fully fleshed out yet lends the DLC some credibility as a legitimate continuation of the game’s story.

On the other hand, it isn’t impossible that FromSoftware would hire other writers to take over for Martin. Martin certainly has a unique voice, but FromSoftware could see an opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, for example, and get other writers, possibly someone also well renowned in fantasy circles, to take over.

In any case, Miyazaki also stated that Shadow of the Erdtree would be a big break for the IP. What that means, obviously, is that Miyazaki and probably the rest of FromSoftware are eager to move on to other projects, and perhaps go back to Elden Ring in the future.

That could mean the long fan requested Bloodborne remake to modern platforms, and leaving PlayStation exclusivity. Or maybe they’ll make that long fan requested remake of The Adventures of Cookie & Cream, who knows?

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will be releasing on May 21, 2024, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows via Steam.
