Insomniac Dates Edge Of Nowhere, Song Of The Deep, & Reveals Two New VR Games

April 18, 2016 by Stephen Daly

The Unspoken and Feral Rites are two new VR games from the Ratchet & Clank developer.

Edge of Nowhere
It’s a busy time at Insomniac Games and today the developer has revealed in an update on its website that it aims to stay just as busy in the months ahead.

Following the release of Ratchet & Clank last week and the upcoming movie (it arrives in theaters April 29th), the developer has four confirmed projects in development – including three for VR.

Its non-VR game, Song of the Deep, is set for release on Tuesday, July 12th and will be sold at retail exclusively in GameStop stores (the chain is acting as the game’s publisher). Fans will also be able to download the game through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace, and Steam. Song of the Deep is a Metroidvania-style 2D adventure game inspired by Irish myth in which a young girl searches for her missing father.

Insomniac’s first VR game will Edge of Nowhere which will be available through the Oculus Store on Monday, June 6th. The studio’s Brian Allgeier told GameInformer that third person games have “pretty much been our bread and butter with Sunset Overdrive, Ratchet & Clank, going all the way back to Spyro. So we really like being able to see a character on-screen with all the detail that looks great in VR. You can really empathize with what the character is going through. You see something happen with a character and it triggers these mirror neurons in our brains and makes us feel what they’re feeling, so we like that sort of empathy.”

Allgeier added that the motion sickness which can affect first person games isn’t an issue in third person titles.

Feral Rites is a new VR game announced by Insomniac today that sees you avenge the death of your father in an adventure brawler set on a mystical island. As you explore, you’ll discover jungles and temples while controlling new magical abilities, including the power to turn yourself into a feral beast. Feral Rites is set for release on the Oculus Store this autumn.

Finally, The Unspoken is an Oculus Touch-enabled VR action game that revolves around spellcasting and magical duels. Using the environment to your advantage, you rise through the ranks of magic fight club in PvP combat. The game is due for release in November and you can check out the debut trailer below.
