It’s Official: the PlayStation Network Ceases to be on Wednesday

February 6, 2012 by Mat Growcott

There’s rarely smoke without fire and it turns out that the PlayStation Network is getting a name change this week.

It turns out that the rumours of a name change for the PlayStation Network are completely true. From Wednesday 8th February, a couple of days from now, the PlayStation network will become the Sony Entertainment Network. The change will have no effect on the network itself, nor on the PSP, so you'll just have to get used to calling it the "SEN" rather than the "PSN."

"Changing the name 'PlayStation Network account' to 'Sony Entertainment Network account' helps clarify the unity between PSN and other Sony Entertainment Network services," a representative told Joystiq. The question here is, and it's a question that many conspiracy theorists are currently asking, why get rid of the PlayStation brand that has so successfully served Sony for the better part of twenty years?

It's a strange decision and one that will confuse some people, ultimately though I don't think it makes much difference, if any at all. Although, of course that is if this is the last we hear of it and this isn't step one of some god awful plan for the PlayStation 4 to be renamed the Sony Entertainment System.
