Minecraft Legends has ended active development.
As reported by The Gamer, Mojang made the official announcement in their latest blog post about the last update. To cut to the chase, this is what Mojang said:
“Since launch, we’ve listened to community feedback and implemented a series of changes and tweaks to make the game better. With that complete, we’re now going to take a step back from development.”
The Gamer notes that Steam metrics showed that Minecraft Legends was unable to maintain an active user base, with active players no longer reaching 100 players two months after its release in June 2023. While this does not account for Xbox user activity on console or PC, it is the most credible explanation for this decision. Microsoft and Mojang have not indicated any other reasons for doing so.
While it would be easy to label this game as a failure, it would be instructive to look at the bigger picture. Minecraft was and remains one of the most successful video games of all time, even crossing over from the genre of video games to become a part of the educational sector.
Mojang existentially needs to find ways to keep growing the Minecraft business beyond selling the game or gathering more users. At least, they need to do so until the entry of a new generation of consoles necessitates creating new ports.
This is the reason that Mojang is making spinoff Minecraft games, and it is, of course, the latest such game. Minecraft: Story Mode sought to establish a narrative for the fans to cling onto. Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler, realizing the potential of using the Minecraft framework in the genre.
Minecraft Legends was clearly a hard sell, using the Minecraft framework to make a real time strategy game. This is hardly the only attempt to create a strategy game with more of an action feel. Double Fine’s Brutal Legend was a famously high profile example of such a title. While most fans will remember the game’s troubled publication history, in the end, it failed to catch on, because most gamers weren’t able to buy into its action strategy design. (If you have yet to play this game, we highly recommend you try it and decide for yourself.)
So the fans have cast their verdict on Minecraft Legends with their active player numbers. Mojang and its support studio Blackbird will take what they learned from this title to their future games, to make them better. And that’s something to look forward to.
And who knows? We may find the game experiencing a revival in the future. If it ever happens, due to something the community discovers, the title will be well set up so that those who want to try it will get to do so.
