Traditionally, a video game “ends its journey” upon its release or when all of its DLC has arrived. But in the case of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, its journey still has a little bit to go. The title recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, and fans have been reliving their favorite memories of the title both on the gameplay side of things and the hype that built it up to be a must-have title from the moment it was announced. Fast forward to now, and things are wrapping up thanks to the final Amiibo being released in a few months. You know which one we’re talking about.
Yep. It’s the Sora Amiibo. Alongside the 5th anniversary, they revealed that the Sora Amiibo would be released on February 16th. If you can believe it, it’s the 93rd Amiibo in the Super Smash Bros line, and some people have all 93 Amiibo! Each Amiibo is tied to a character in the game, and when the Amiibo was first revealed for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, the goal was that gamers could “train” and “program” a fighter through the Amiibo so that they’d have a good “partner” in tag team matches and beyond.
Regardless of whether that was what gamers used them for, the Amiibo took off, and the frenzy around them continues to this day despite them not coming out as frequently. The Sora one is particularly valuable despite not having been released yet, not only because it’s the last of the set, but because it’s Sora’s Amiibo.
That’s why on the My Nintendo UK store, you can pre-order it but can only get one per customer. They know that it’ll be popular and want to ensure that everyone can get a chance to get one.
The history of Sora being in the game is a fascinating tale. Nintendo gamers have wanted him in the series ever since Solid Snake and Sonic broke the mold with the third entry by bringing in 3rd Party characters. Then, when the Wii U/3DS game came out, and a poll was released to see who should be in the game, Sora was the #1 request, but they couldn’t get him in the game just yet. Masahiro Sakurai even hid the results of the poll for years because he didn’t want Square Enix to “feel the pressure” of having to get him in the game.
Then, for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, he was the final DLC character, and the internet nearly broke when he arrived. And now, once again, Sora’s “arrival” will end the game’s cycle.
