Super Smash Bros Ultimate Getting 5th Anniversary Spirit Event

December 7, 2023 by Todd Black

Five years!

It’s almost scary to think that Super Smash Bros Ultimate released five years ago today. Where has the time gone? Have we really been able to play it for so long? The answer is “we don’t know” and “yes.” It’s hard to picture, but the game came out in 2018, and just like in 2018, it came out on the day of The Game Awards and even announced the first DLC character during the event! The point is that the game has been around a while, and you might want a reason to go back in and play it for yourself. The good news is that we have that motivation.

The game has been running “events” since its launch, but with the completion of its DLC content, they’ve been doing “reruns” ever since. But starting today, a special Super Smash Bros Ultimate 5th anniversary event will start and run for the next five days. As noted on Twitter and beyond, the event will allow players to get 5x the experience they usually get and 5x the SP they get from fights. You’ll even be given some more Snack L’s within the game!

But that wasn’t all. The news also revealed that all new spirits are in the game! Masahiro Sakurai revealed in a breakdown of the game that the spirits were meant to be a new way of doing the trophy system while adding new gameplay elements to the title. Many people liked what the spirits did, so it’s good to know that more are coming for the anniversary. An official list of spirits hasn’t been uploaded yet.

Some mini-events will be coming in January on the tournament circuit, so stay tuned for that!

Sakurai confirmed that to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Smash Bros. Ultimate, they are adding new spirits to the game.

But wait! There’s still more! In honor of this anniversary, Nintendo revealed that the final DLC character, Sora, will have his Amiibo drop on February 16th! While that is a little over two months away, it’s still an important announcement as this will potentially be the “final Amiibo,” barring a special release from Nintendo on another title.

Looking back at the five-plus year history of the game, it’s remarkable how big it was at launch and how big it got via the DLC characters. The character trailers helped build hype for the game that eclipsed the past titles. With the addition of key characters like Ridley, Joker, Simon Belmont, Sephiroth, Sora, and more, the roster has never been more complete or beautiful.

Plus, it’s the best-selling fighting game of all time!
