Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition seems to have leaked, and from an unlikely source.
MetaCritic has a listing for Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition, to be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. There is no other information found on this listing.
This comes after the Resident Evil 4 remake initially released on March 24, 2023, on both PlayStation consoles, but also Windows and Xbox Series X|S. Even more interestingly, this leak comes days before this same remake releases on Apple’s platforms.
While Apple’s version of the game is no doubt well optimized to play even on phones, and is seemingly intended as a showcase for Apple Arcade, Apple may find it harder to compete with this version of the game if a new release is coming. That’s true regardless if this Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition is a PlayStation exclusive, or if it turns out that it will also be a multiplatform release.
Obviously, the PlayStation remains a supremely popular platform, that Apple Arcade can’t even say they gamely compete with. But the real dealbreaker will likely come if it also comes to Windows and Xbox.
That would make it so that the host of new PC gaming handhelds would be able to run this game on multiple platforms. That definitely means devices like the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. The Steam Deck is a big maybe on that front, given the device’s comparatively older hardware. The March release of Resident Evil 4 was not officially Steam Deck Verified, but players willing to spend time to tweak their settings can make it run just fine.
Steam Deck or not, if this game is playable on ROG Ally, Legion Go, or any of the other Windows handhelds from AYN, AYANEO, GPD, and others, that ruins the case for buying Resident Evil 4 on Apple Arcade. While iPhones and iPads can also boast portability, they also won’t have the versatility of these Windows based devices either. Whether the game becomes available on Steam, Epic Game Store, or Game Pass, that will make it playable on these Windows handhelds.
As for the contents of Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition, we would have to assume it’s coming with Separate Ways and Mercenaries, with all the other DLC bundled in. Capcom has made such bundles and special releases before, and this one is one last chance for Capcom to sell the game to any gamers who don’t have it yet.
We do have to address one final elephant in the room; is this the unannounced major title Capcom is releasing before this financial year ends? We know a lot of people are sure it’s a completely new title, but what if it’s really this one after all? But we likely won’t have to wait that long to find the answers to these questions.
