LEGO Fortnite Is Finally Here, And It Is Its Own Game

December 4, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

Lego has seen it fit to go mum on the details of this release.

Lego Fortnite is finally here, but instead of just being a single collaboration or crossover in the world of Fortnite Battle Royale, it is coming as its own game.

And we may have only been slated to receive the former, if not for recent issues with Traveler’s Tales leading the Lego toy corporation to seek out other partners to make games with. Of course, we have already seen the release of Lego 2K Drive, and this is definitely not the last non-Traveler’s Tales based Lego game that we will see in the future.

Now, Lego has put up an official website and FAQ page for Lego Fortnite, but we don’t have a lot of details on the game for now.  Lego Fortnite is coming December 7, on platforms that already have Fortnite, and that’s all we know for now.

At least, that does confirm that Lego Fortnite will be playable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on Epic Games Store. We can’t confirm quite yet if there will be a Lego Fortnite on mobile, as either an Android app, or a web based version that can be played on Android or Apple devices, but the money likely says there will be.

Lego does suggest that Lego Fortnite is straight up what its title implies it to be. So we can probably expect a battle royale format, with players free to join on lobbies. While the violence in Fortnite has already been softened, Lego Fortnite will likely be even more child-friendly.

On the Lego side of things, there will likely be a collectible aspect added to this battle royale format, as is the style of every Lego game. Maybe there will be a mode where the winner is whoever has the most collectibles?

There’s clearly a lot of potential for the game on this side of it. For example, Epic may set up a system where players can get more free items in between games by rummaging for collectibles during each battle royale. Subsequently, they can offer microtransactions that give players more collectibles to trade it for items, or straight up some of the items themselves.

As always, these systems may seem greedy and predatory to some, but this format is all about gathering tons of free players to form communities, and enticing the whales to spend for social proof. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if this game was free-to-play instead of being a full retail release either. All will be revealed on December 7, 2023.
