Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope Creative Director Teases Whether A Third Game Will Happen

October 23, 2023 by Todd Black

He wants it, why not give it to him?

Sometimes, it’s a no-brainer that a video game should get a follow-up, spinoff, or direct sequel. Whether it’s because the gameplay is incredible, the story has room to be expanded, or the game overall is just a fun time, it’s usually easy to see whether a game is doing well enough for a sequel to be made. For Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, that success is harder to gauge. Part of it is because Ubisoft has been not-so-subtle jerks about the game since its release in October of 2022. The game had universal praise from fans and critics and seemed to be on its way to glory on every level.

But a few months after its release, Ubisoft bashed the game and said that it wasn’t “meeting expectations” in the holiday season and thus was “underperforming.” To this day, we don’t know if Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope has crossed a million sold, a couple of million sold, or how well its DLC sold. That’s rubbed many fans wrong because they enjoy the series and want to get more from it. But if Ubisoft isn’t on board, it won’t happen.

Enter Davide Soliani, who is the face of this franchise as well as its Creative Director. He’s the guy making sure that everything soars to its highest heights, and he’s done that so far. In a chat with Nintendo Everything, he’s happily said that he wants to do more with this series but that it’s “too early” to say whether we’ll get a third game:

“I love Nintendo, I love my team, and I love what we did so if there would be a chance to continue somehow, someday, why not? But right now it’s too early to say anything because we just finished a four-year cycle of development with the with the main game and the DLC. And now it’s time to think about the future. But it’s too early to say something.”

On a certain level, that’s fair for him to say. After all, the first game came out in 2017, and it wasn’t until 2021 that we got confirmation that the sequel was in the works, and it took a while after that announcement for the new one to arrive. So, if they need time to think things through before committing to a new game, that’s fine.

But it also should be noted that if they were to start working on it soon, they’d be able to be there in the early years of the Nintendo Switch successor.
