Super Mario Bros Wonder Is A “New Phase” For Mario Titles

October 12, 2023 by Todd Black

What comes next? Who knows?

UPDATE

What “style” would you like to see from the next 2D Mario title? Let us know below!

ORIGINAL STORY

It was clear from the announcement trailer that Super Mario Bros Wonder would be unlike any title with Mario that we had seen before. That in and of itself was a bold thing to say because we’ve seen LOTS of Mario games over the years. However, with how the game looked and played in the trailer, Nintendo was clearly cooking up something special. Over the last several months, we’ve seen the wacky antics of the game via the Wonder Flower and the new power-ups and enemies, and Nintendo has outright admitted that this game is a “new phase” for the series.

This was revealed during an interview with Game Informer, where producer Takashi Tezuka said, “I believe that we have transitioned from the New Super Mario Bros. series into a new phase, but at this point, we have no idea what the next game style will be.”

Some might think it’s odd that they’re already thinking about the “next game,” but that’s how they have to handle things in the video game trade. After all, if you’re not working on something new, you’re not working at all. Plus, it’s fair that they’re a little “unsure” of what’s coming, given that there are so many new and fresh ideas in Super Mario Bros Wonder that they kind of seem hard to top right now.

Also in that interview was Art Director Masanobu Sato, who noted that while the team may not have an idea “right now” for what’s coming up in the future, they do have a big baseplate to build off of: “What we do know is that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has set a bigger stage for adventure for Mario and friends.”

That is very true. The new game takes what the older games did and takes them to new heights and literal new levels. For example, by taking things to the Flower Kingdom, there are a plethora of new enemies for Mario and his friends to defeat. If they take a similar tactic with future titles, gamers will get to enjoy a new expansion of villains to fight.

Furthermore, the badge system is a new element that has plenty of room to go based on how well it’s received in the upcoming title. Currently, there are only so many badges you can get, and you can only wear one at a time. So we could see some tweaks of that in future games.

But for now, gamers are counting down to October 20th, when Mario’s new adventure will launch on Nintendo Switch.
