PlayStation 5 Slim Will Still Allow Expandable Storage

October 11, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Bump up your storage space with an M.2 SSD.

If you want to purchase a PlayStation 5, you might like to hold off a little longer. Just yesterday, we got word of Sony delivering a new model of the PlayStation 5. Players can soon expect PlayStation 5 Slim models to enter the marketplace this November. These new models will shrink down the size of the PlayStation 5 console, and it’s even providing a means to add a disc drive to the digital-only version if you fancy getting physical media later on.

However, with these new models came the question of expandable storage options. We know that the new model of the PlayStation 5 will come packed with a 1 TB storage drive option. That’s a slight bump up from the previous standard of 825 GB. But with the latest video game releases, especially AAA behemoths that launch, that storage space can quickly get filled up. If you’re one to keep games on your storage drive or play through a few games regularly, having more options to expand the storage is appealing. That could come in the form of purchasing a higher-tier model device with more storage or going with a model that can expand your storage drive.

Fortunately, the PlayStation 5 has the option to add an M.2 SSD. This is not changing with the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim models hitting the marketplace. Speaking with IGN, a spokesperson for Sony confirmed that consumers can expect the same process of inserting an internal M.2 SSD into their console. The form factor might have shrunk down, but don’t expect features to be missing with these new models. That might be a massive relief for fans who feared the new PlayStation 5 Slim would forfeit the ability to add an internal storage drive.

With that said the PlayStation 5 Slim for both the physical and digital versions is not slated to launch until November. We don’t have a specific date just yet, so we’ll have to keep on the lookout. Of course, it’s already been confirmed that once the current stock of PlayStation 5 models sells out, then the only models that would be offered are the new PlayStation 5 Slim versions. So again, if you’re not thrilled with the larger size of the current PlayStation 5 or just want a digital-only version, it’s best to wait a bit longer for the new models to be released, especially given the fact that these new upcoming digital versions will at least give you the option of adding a disc drive later on.
