The Witcher blew up in popularity thanks to CD Projekt Red’s video game adaptation. While the novels have had their own following, the majority of the world grew to learn about Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer, and the other cast of character’s escapades from the video games. So, it wasn’t too surprising that a live-action adaptation also came to fruition. Much like CD Projekt Red, the television series also took to the novel source material and adapted their show from that. As a result, there are differences across the board. Regardless, it looks like the end is in sight if you grew to love the show because you enjoyed the video game franchise.
A new report is surfacing online. Thanks to The Gamer, we’re finding out that Redanian Intelligence has unveiled some initial plans prior to the big Hollywood strike. The plans were to have season four and season five filmed back to back. That would likely mean less of a wait to enjoy the new season. However, this plan fell apart when the Hollywood strikes began, and it’s still not over. With the SAF-AFTRA strikes still being handled, we’re left waiting for that to be settled.
Interestingly, this report also indicates that the show would end after season five. That would make it just two seasons featuring actor Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. I’m sure you’re more than familiar with Henry Cavill’s departure. While the actor was a fan of the franchise and praised for his role as Geralt, Henry opted to leave the series after this latest season. It’s still not quite unveiled as to the reasons behind Henry’s departure, but the show has been declining in viewership.
It will be interesting to see just how Liam takes up with being Geralt and the viewer’s reception. Likewise, perhaps the interest in the latest season could persuade the show to last longer than just up to season five. Again, we’ll just have to wait and see now that filming is slated to start next year. That means we’ll be waiting a good while before we see The Witcher appear on the Netflix streaming service.
Fortunately, we know that even when this series ends, CD Projekt Red is not done with the franchise. Another video game is in the works, but right now, details are incredibly scarce. We’ll be waiting quite a while before we get any insight into what this new game series will bring to the table.
