There’s a new teaser trailer circulating around that seems to suggest an announcement for Titanfall 3.
Just as a refresher, Respawn Entertainment had made themselves a name with the Titanfall franchise, a game series that combined FPS action with giant mechs, in a way that was more accessible than the Japanese mech games we are used to seeing, such as Armored Core.
The original Titanfall was conceived of as a showcase for online multiplayer, but that vision of the game faltered in light of technical issues and low player counts. However, Respawn bounced back when they were given more freedom to produce Titanfall 2, particularly adding a popular single player campaign alongside improved online multiplayer modes.
However, Titanfall was never a heavily profitable franchise for publisher Electronic Arts. As a result, the company mandated that Respawn take on other projects. Today, Respawn is best known for APEX Legends, a free-to-play battle royale game that has been prominent enough to properly introduce most gamers to the studio.
On top of this, Respawn was fortunate enough to get their hands on the Star Wars license. They produced Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, both standouts not just in the world of video games, but also Star Wars media.
With this context, it would be easy to see that Respawn can now more easily sway Electronic Arts to allow them to jump back into Titanfall. While APEX Legends is theoretically set in the same universe, Respawn would want to particularly jump back into making FPS and mech gameplay.
And so this brings us to the rumor. As shared on reddit, an influencer named J Hale Storm is sharing a clip of what they claim is a trailer that’s been going around teasing Titanfall 3.
The trailer does show both the logos of Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, and fades to a number 3. It also flashed the date October 27, 2023.
Of course, we cannot verify the authenticity of this leaked trailer, so take everything in this trailer with a grain of salt. In fact, it may be just as likely that this is a teaser for the third Star Wars Jedi game, if the trailer is even real.
But if it is the return of Titanfall, hopefully this is happening because Respawn has made EA enough money that they are more confident to give them creative freedom and a sufficient budget to make the proper sequel we want from them.
