There are few video game designers and directors respected more than Masahiro Sakurai. After all, this is a man who has been around since some of the earliest generations of gaming and helped make several franchises that we adore to this day. Even now, when he’s not “actively working” on a gaming title that we know about, at least he is helping make the gaming community better through his “Creating Games” YouTube channel. In it, Sakurai gives numerous insights and tips that can help up-and-coming creators make something special while revealing the process that he and other creators made when they developed their titles.
Each video has been a treasure, even the ones that don’t directly connect to game design topics. But, as a fanbase always does, they have asked Masahiro Sakurai to do some things BEYOND what his channel already does. The good news is that Daddy Sakurai has heard the fan’s call and decided to take them up on the offer:
While that doesn’t give fans any clues as to who he will be collaborating with or when we’ll see this “crossover event,” it will be something interesting at the very least. Sakurai has made it clear in his videos that he plays a wide array of games, and not just ones he’s worked on or Nintendo titles. He’s even admitted that there were mistakes made in certain games that he made and that others tried to make shine. Fans will no doubt try to guess where he goes or what games he’ll play. You’ll need to stay tuned to see where he pops up!
As his YouTube Channel continues to grow, many people wonder how long he’ll make the series and whether he’ll ever return to designing/directing video games. The first answer is easy to give, as during his “anniversary” video for the channel, he admitted he wanted to do this series for “years to come.” As for his return to game development, he’s been a bit more coy about that. He has admitted in past interviews that he is “semi-retired.” But, on his YouTube Channel, he admitted that games like Super Smash Bros are unlikely to continue without him because past attempts ended in failure.
Plus, he’s hinted that there are other games/franchises he’d like to help build up or see remastered. In truth, Sakurai does whatever he wants, whenever he wants. So, if he’s focused on his YouTube Channel for now, that’s what fans should get used to seeing him on.
